Helen is 87, I met her at an Age UK meeting at the Phoenix Center in Mile Cross, where I went to find sitters for the project. You can see she is a bright spark, with a wonderful smile, in fact of all my sitters she beamed through the whole of our sitting today. Helen, is just coming out of a difficult three years, having lost her husband and a son, amongst others. Helen was not one of my most talkative sitters, but never the less, was straight forward and a delight to draw. She will come again on Thursday, for a short session..she’s a very busy woman!
I was quite pleased with the progress I made in our shortened session today, yet when Helen left and looked at the drawing, she gasped and said “oh no” and covered her eyes, leaving quickly. When I draw my sitters I see their charm and character, yet for them, what they feel on the inside (which is the same as they felt when they were younger) does not match what they see on the outside; their age and physical decline. Not surprising really.
